Ever look at a price tag and wonder if it's really worth it? The Time to Earn Calculator transforms how you think about money by showing the true cost of any purchase in hours of your life. Instead of seeing '$500', you'll see '20 hours of work, half a work week.' That shift changes everything.
Money is abstract. Time is real. When you realize that new gadget costs you a full week of work, or that daily coffee habit costs a full work week every year, you start making very different decisions. This isn't about being cheap. It's about being intentional with the limited hours you have.
Pick from quick presets (iPhone, PlayStation, new car, house down payment, daily coffee) or enter any custom price. Toggle Advanced mode to factor in taxes, commute time, and work expenses for your real hourly wage, usually 20–40% lower than the number on your paycheck.
Ready to transform how you think about money? Pick a preset or enter any price above to see how many hours of your life it really costs. For more money insights, check out our Subscription Cost Calculator to see what your recurring bills really add up to, or the Coffee Cost Calculator to see what that daily latte habit costs over a lifetime.
Our calculator uses proven formulas and up-to-date data to give you accurate results. Here's a transparent look at the methodology behind your calculation.
The Formula
Hours Needed = Item Price ÷ Real Hourly WageReal Hourly Wage = (Gross Wage × Paid Hours × (1 − Tax%) − Weekly Expenses) ÷ (Paid Hours + Commute Hours)Days Needed = Hours Needed ÷ (Weekly Hours ÷ 7)Weeks Needed = Hours Needed ÷ Weekly HoursWe divide the purchase price by your hourly wage to get the hours needed. In Advanced mode we compute a 'real' hourly wage by subtracting taxes and work expenses, then spreading your take-home pay across paid hours plus unpaid commute time. The result is usually 20–40% lower than your stated wage, and that's the number that matters.
Choose a common purchase (iPhone, PS5, new car, vacation…) or type in any custom price.
Use your take-home (after-tax) rate for the most accurate result. Not sure? Toggle Advanced to have it calculated for you.
Instantly see how many hours, days, and weeks of work the purchase represents, plus opportunity cost, habit impact, and side-hustle scenarios.
